Hi Class,

Late work will not be accepted in this class for the following reasons:

  1. All of the assignments for this Web based course are clearly laid out before the semester starts.
  2. The material for this course is online. It can be done anytime (before the deadline) and anywhere. If you must go out of town, use a computer at the hotel or the relative's house you are staying at, or visit an Internet Cafe. This is a college class; it is your responsibility for figure out how to get'r done.
  3. Some of your classmates began work on this course before the semester started, and worked hard during the week or two before the first day and actually finished many of their assignments before classes even started. So you also can and should work ahead.
  4. The deadlines are set in place so that students cannot procrastinate and fall too far behind to successfully complete this course.
  5. This class is designed to help you prepare for your future in the real world, and deadlines are definitely “real world.”
  6. As with any deadline, if you wait till the last minute, life happens and you may miss your deadlines – so do your work well before the deadline, not at 11:30PM of the due date.
  7. Another advantage to doing your work before the deadline is that you can email your professor any questions you may have before the due date, so you will have to opportunity to get answers back in time to make the deadline.
  8. If your computer gets sick, go to the SCF lab or go to your best friend's house. Pay your mother a visit. Figure out how to get'r done. If you get sick, remember it is an online course: simply log on and do as much of your assignment as possible, and go back and finish it when you feel better. And if you can only do part of it, well, that's better than a 0.
  9. I always enjoy reading notes from mothers and lawyers. But if I start accepting excuses, it really means that the students who spin the best or most elaborate tales would be the ones who are allowed to do make up work. And this is not fair.
  10. Many years ago, during my first year teaching at SCF, one of my students complained “Why are you giving Bill a makeup exam? That is not fair to me. It just means that he gets several extra days to complete his work, and now he can even get the answers from a classmate. But the students who did their work on time do not get this advantage.” And my student was correct.

So what happens if you do miss an assignment because life happens or you simply forgot or you had better things to do and you did not make plans to do your work until the last minute?

  • This class has enough assignments that you can get a zero on several projects and still get an A.
  • Additionally, if you do your Skills-based training before the deadline, you can redo your project a second time to work for a higher score.
  • Note: CGS1570 students can take the MOS certification exam - see details on the online syllabus - which can be used in place of a missing grade or your lowest score.
