Subject: RE: AS to BS, 2 + 2 + 2 SCF-USF

Floyd,

RE: please “clarify some things as I advise our SCF students who want to go on the USF…”

I refer students to this link for information about the AS to BS. http://www.sarasota.usf.edu/academics/CAS/academics/IT/ug_bsas_it.php  There is a lot of information on the “Program of Study” link.

Students interested in the BS in Applied Science program with a concentration in IT are highly encouraged to take the following 3 courses before starting the program: COP 2510 Programming Concepts I (Our catalog says COP2361, but that number never went through Tallahassee. Your COP 2510 is definitely the correct course.) COP2250 Java Essentials MAD 2104 Discrete Mathematics. Python and Java are still the preferred languages for prerequisites. Here's a current link: BSAS Program Information.

There are no specific prerequisites to the program, however, the students MUST have a Florida Public AS, and 18 hours of general education. We require that they have ENC1101 & 1102, and their 2 college maths. That’s because we cannot meet those requirements here.

This is one place where I’ve encountered a problem: AS students at SCF are evidently allowed to take ENC 2210 Technical Writing in place of ENC 1102. This does NOT work for USF. We must have 1101 and 1102.

We DO accept COP2510. I don’t know who told you otherwise, but it is accepted.

They do not need discrete math though it is a prereq to a course in Information Security(Cryptography). Discrete math is still a prereq for the BS in IT, but, discrete math is not a prereq for AS-BS. I would say that you should strongly suggest it to anyone who knows they want to do more in Information Security.

I have heard from faculty that some students are not prepared for the coursework at USF. They should be sure they have some programming basics and a programming language preferably Python or JAVA, but C++ is OK. Visual Basic is a part of the program most students seem to take at SCF, but it’s probably the least used here.

I hope I have addressed all your questions and concerns. IF not, please let me know. I’m happy to help.
